Photos
Photos I've taken wtih my Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D, which are both wonderful cameras! Some additional photos are here on the Travels page.
Key West & Miami
We had a great vacation in Florida! More photos are here, on the Travels Page for our vacation.
Art Deco and neon in Miami Beach.
Coastal Maine
We had a wonderful trip visiting friends in Maine. A highlight was a "Puffin Watch" boat tour out to a small island where an Atlantic puffin colony is being reestablished. Saw other ocean birds (zooming around!) as well.
Common tern.
Northern gannet. They're big, with 4 to 5 foot wingspans. And are amazing divers.

Birds and a Rodeo in Florida
We had a great time visiting relatives in Punta Gorda, Florida. Many bird sightings at Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda. And scroll down to see photos I took at the Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo. (Also, more rodeo photos are here, on a separate Web page.)
Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
Solitary Sandpiper (I think).
White Ibis.
Spotted Sandpiper (I think).

Juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Looks nothing like the adult, above!
Osprey.
Spotted Sandpiper (I think).
Wilson's Plovers (I think).
And here are some photos from the Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo. More photos from the rodeo are on here, on a separate Web page.

Orchid
An orchid I gave to Elizabeth for Valentine's Day.
Bombay Hook and Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuges, Delaware
Saw many birds at these two National Wildlife Refuges, both along the Delaware Bay shore.
The Friday after Thanksgiving was a cloudy -- and sometimes rainy -- day. But we had a great time seeing many birds at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.
American Avocets zooming about!
Great Egret.
White-throated Sparrow.
Northern Shoveler.
Northern Pintails.
Mallard.
Then on the following Sunday -- a sunny day -- we went to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Not as many viewpoints for birds, but we were much closer to (many!) visiting Snow Geese. It was a treat seeing -- and hearing -- them up rather close. (Noisy!)
Northern Pintails (I think...).
Mason Neck State Park, Virginia
A nice Sunday afternoon watching the birds over the water at Mason Neck State Park. The birds were far off, so these images are heavily cropped and therefore not such great quaility. (Especially the Kingfisher!)
Ruddy Ducks.
Gull, diving.
Kingfisher, with dinner in its beak.
And after the meal...
Forster's Tern.
Tufted titmouse.
Great Falls National Park, Virginia
Watched this fellow and his SO kayaking not far below the falls. Looks like fun!
This was right before she rolled, but she was back up right away.
White Oak Canyon, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Back to a wonderful spot! (See below...)
White Oak Canyon, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
I think White Oak Canyon is one of the best places within Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. It's usually rather croweded on nice weekends, but I took a day off work -- with my camera -- and had a wonderful time enjoying all the flowing water, sights, and sounds.
I think this is my favorite photo from the day.
Hummingbirds at our feeder
For better or worse, I never get tired of taking photos of these tiny little creatures! (I think they're less than 3" long.)
McGregor Bay, Ontario, Canada
A few photos from our vacation in Canada. Many more photos from our trip are here.
I watched this mink for a while. Twice I saw it swim out maybe 15 feet from shore. Each time it then disappeared underwater for a minute or so. The first time it reappeared with a crayfish, and the second time with a "real" fish.
Some views of a beautiful part of the world -- carved and shaped by glaciers.
Hummingbirds at our feeder
My first try at photos of a hummingbird at our feeder. 1/1600 seccond exposures.
My second try... (Another day.) 1/2500 second exposures.
Later in the day, without direct sun. 1/1250 second exposures.
And my third try! 1/500 second.
1/800 second.
1/500 second.

Inside Passage & Denali National Park, Alaska
We had a wonderful two-week trip to Alaska! I've posted many photos -- and details on our trip -- here.
Shepherdstown, West Virginia
Photos from our friends' garden -- and from the garden tour -- in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
Near Great Falls, Maryland
The Potomac River, downstream from Great Falls, from along the Billy Goat Trail.
The C&O Canal, near Widewater, at the end of the day, and with nice reflections in the ice.
Orange, Virginia (near Montpelier -- James Madison's home)
A nice fog covering the hills along Virginia Route 20, between Orange and Charlottesville.
Tree at Monticello.
Photoshop
I'm (slowly!) learning Photoshop. Here's a before and after of a photo I took in Italy. (Click an image to see larger versions.) Not a huge difference, but I think the "after" photo has a bit more presence and definition.
After Photoshop:

At Home
My first try at indoor plant photography. A pitcher plant -- a gift from my Mom.
Elkhorn Slough, California
Kayaking on Elkhorn Slough. Lots of birds, including these Lesser Yellowlegs (I think).
And this Long-billed Curlew (I think).
Lots of Pelicans!
And lots of otters, too, although I was able to get only a few photos of them.
Very noisy Sea Lions.
And quite a few inquisitive seals popped up and eyed us (from a distance), but I didn't get any good photos of them.
Garrapata State Park, California
A foggy early evening, looking up into the hills away from the coast.
